Public Interest Award

Public Interest Alberta would like to say thank you to all of the advocates who make the public good their priority. Facing the political obstacles in this province makes a tough job for any citizen. We can't do our work without your work, so every year Public Interest Alberta recognizes two citizens for their work in the public interest.

2007 Winners

Brian Staples

Dr. Staples is the chairperson of the Seniors Action and Liaison Team (SALT) in Edmonton and a long-time advocate on many public interest issues. Working with seniors groups across the province he is working to create the Independant Seniors Advocate. The Advocate would be an independant office in the provincial government which would work to assist seniors in distress.

Jackie Flanagan

Flanagan is the owner of Alberta Views Magazine (based in Calgary), a former educator and a strong supporter of democracy, education and the arts.

Alberta Views has set the goal to "lead the political, cultural and social debate" in the province. In a world where the media continues to remove resources for investigative journalism, her work at the magazine has given local writers the opportunity to research and write on issues affecting Albertans.
