Develop the full potential of all Alberta Students - It's time to complete the Public Education Picture
On September 13th, 2006, Public Interest Alberta launched its campaign to advocate for an education system that “Develops the Full Potential of All Alberta Students”. In September and October, with the support of Burke and Associates, a professional survey company, we completed a comprehensive on-line survey of over 4000 Albertans about the critical issues in K – 12 education. We also distributed thousands of post cards that invited people to write to the Minister of Education to tell him what needs to be done to ensure we can develop the full potential of all Alberta students.
The Survey on Education report was presented at a media conference November 20th, 2006 and thousands of copies have been distributed to teachers, staff and parent organizations throughout Alberta. The report reflects the growing reality of the lack of access to specialized staff and educational resources, class sizes, school infrastructure and proximity and extensive problems with the support for children with special needs.
Despite the many problems in our education system, the latest provincial government education budget will not provide enough resources to even keep up to inflation, let alone address the rapid population growth in Alberta. Furthermore, the Minister of Education has expressed his full support for the development of more private sector involvement in building and operating schools.
PIA’s Education Task Force has already developed an extensive advocacy plan to address these important issues over the next year. PIA is planning to host a series of forums to help raise awareness of the critical issues in education, build our advocacy network and increase pressure on government to address these critical problems.
Education and Alberta's Future: PIA hosts three forums
All three forums featured internationally renowned education expert Dr. Fraser Mustard, a panel of speakers and a round-table discussion, and focused on the importance and interconnectedness of early childhood, K-12 and post-secondary education.
