The political debate over cutting public services is going to heat up as the recession and economic problems continue. Well connected lobbyists will be calling for more corporate hand outs, tax cuts, and cuts to programs and services that are vital to the well-being of Albertans.
Public Interest Alberta is calling on the Government to reject these misguided approaches and to make wise investments in strong public services and programs and building a green economy. We need to make sure that our public dollars are going to diversify the economy, support all Albertans and improve our environment. We want the Alberta government to take 10 steps to a better Alberta:
1. Build a strong public early childhood education and childcare system
2. Address the critical issues facing our kindergarten to grade 12 education system
3. Increase support for agencies and programs for families in crisis and people with disabilities
4. Build a top quality, more affordable and accessible public post -secondary education system
5. Improve our public healthcare and health promotion system
6. Commit to a comprehensive poverty reduction strategy
7. Expand and improve our public seniors homecare and long-term care system
8. Increase support for municipal services and community programs
9. Invest in green jobs and stronger protection for our environment
10. Support Alberta’s family farms by investing in a local food policy
