Tuesday, November 24, 2009
marks the 20th anniversary of the federal government's unanimous commitment to end child poverty by the year 2000.

On this date, PIA and Edmonton Social Planning Council released a report entitled "We Must Do Better - It's Time to Make Alberta Poverty-Free." It highlights the current features of poverty in Alberta in light of the economic recession, and the critical need for a comprehensive plan to eliminate poverty.

The report is the product of a province-wide series of forums on poverty reduction held in the summer and fall of 2009 (see below), and was made possible by the support of many partner and sponsor organizations.

Forums on Poverty Reduction: We Can Do Better

Throughout the summer and fall of 2009, Public Interest Alberta, along with many partner and sponsor organizations, coordinated a series of seven public forums around Alberta on the important theme of poverty and poverty reduction. They took place in Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, Red Deer, Edmonton and Calgary. Through keynote speeches, breakout sessions and public discussion, the forums were an opportunity to share experiences and information, and to build support for a much-needed comprehensive poverty reduction strategy for the province.
