Media Advisory: Rally outside PC policy convention, today

EDMONTON—Albertans from all over the province will gather outside the PC policy convention today from noon to 2 p.m. for a block party rally at 45 Ave between Gateway Blvd and Calgary Trail in Edmonton to protest the Redford government’s devastating March budget cuts.

Media are invited to attend.

"Cuts to various government services, seniors care, post-secondary education, disability programs and more have eliminated services Albertans count on along with hundreds of jobs. Communities around the province have been left reeling,” said AUPE President Guy Smith.

“Those demonstrating today are real Albertans from real communities who have been affected by these cuts. They have come to the PC party’s doorstep to tell them to stop destroying the services and programs they rely on,” said Smith.

“In their attempts to fix Alberta’s revenue problems, PC policies are creating more problems. Budget cuts to public services create other deeper economic, social, and environmental costs, rather than eliminating them,” said Bill Moore-Kilgannon, Executive Director of Public Interest Alberta.

“Albertans are feeling the impacts of austerity from this government, and we want the PC party to know they are heading down the wrong road. There are better ways to fix Alberta’s revenue problems that do not involve hurting Alberta’s families and most vulnerable,” said Bill Moore-Kilgannon.

The rally will showcase live music, speakers and satirical booths that highlight the failures of the Redford government’s service and program cuts. This is a family-friendly block party put together by Alberta based organizations.
