Edmonton businesses are calling for more safety, cleanliness, and investment Downtown, but an expert warns the city’s social problems will not be solved by policing.

The Downtown Recovery Coalition, predominantly representing local businesses, called on the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) and city council to improve safety and security at transit stations and increase police patrols in the city’s core as among its top priorities on Thursday. The group also asks the city to repair, maintain and clean sidewalks, roads, garbage cans, and other infrastructure to make Downtown more welcoming, for construction teams to minimize disruption and minimize blockades, and for private developers to make sure properties are well-maintained.
