Just a few days ago we launched a new campaign called "Post-Secondary Education is the Answer" to call for increased government investment in post-secondary education (PSE). PSE can provide the answers to many of the important questions our society is facing today, like how we improve our health care and education systems, how we diversify and strengthen our economy, and how we deal with the growing environmental challenges our province faces. Please attend one of these meetings to hear about the public advocacy campaign and to share your ideas about the importance of post-secondary education. These meetings will all take place from 12:00 PM (noon) to 1:30 PM. Lunch will be provided.

EDMONTON—A rally was held in front of MP Peter Goldring’s office today, International Human Rights Day, to demand answers to why the Conservative government is pushing through legislation that will allow provinces to deny refugee claimants access to social services. “Historically, Canada has had a reputation of helping vulnerable populations get back on their feet, so we were shocked when Peter Goldring asked why the families could not just go to a homeless shelter,” said Bill Moore-Kilgannon, Executive Director of Public Interest Alberta. “Given refugee claimants must already demonstrate great need in order to qualify for provincial income assistance and that it takes months for refugee claimants to get work permits, it is cruel to deny them the support they need to survive when they first arrive in Canada.”

Public Interest Alberta, the Edmonton Social Planning Council, and the Alberta College of Social Workers’ released a new provincial report, No Change, on child and family poverty on Monday, November 24th. The day was the 25th anniversary of the unanimous commitment in the House of Commons to eliminate child poverty by the year 2000. We are encouraging Albertans to e-mail their MLAs, as well as the Premier and Minister of Human Services, to demand they take immediate action to fulfill their promise made in the last election to eliminate child poverty.
