Public Interest Alberta and The Council of Canadians delivered petitions to the office of Conservative MP Laurie Hawn with signatures of over 5,500 Albertans calling for the federal government's so-called "Fair Elections Act" to be fixed or scrapped. The petition opposes the unnecessarily strict voter ID requirements that could stop hundreds of thousands of people, including youth, Aboriginal, and low-income citizens from voting in the next election. EDMONTON—Public Interest Alberta is challenging the Redford Government to investigate and stop seniors care facilities and other health facilities that ban, or threaten to ban, people from seeing their loved ones without due process. 

Dear members and supporters of Public Interest Alberta's Seniors Task Force, we need your support to stop the Alberta government from eliminating the Alberta Senior’s Drug benefit. As you know, the Alberta government has announced they plan to cut $180 million by creating a means-tested drug plan that will place the biggest burden on those seniors who are the most frail or sick and require the most drugs. Alberta Health Services (AHS) announced last Tuesday they are cancelling the ‘first available bed’ policy and reversing the plans to give the home care contract for three supportive-living co-operatives to for-profit corporations. While this shows that public pressure is having an impact they are still giving the majority of home care contracts to corporations and are still planning to cut 1700 long-term care beds from the system.
