It's Time to Demand Electoral Financing Reform in Alberta!

When it comes to the financing of our political campaigns and parties, Alberta has some of the least democratic, least innovative regulations in the country. Public Interest Alberta is highlighting the issue of campaign and party finance as the first step towards More Democracy in our province.  As Albertans, we cherish the principles of our democracy, and must demand reform to ensure that electoral financing regulations work in the public interest.

Alberta's Income Support System the Lowest in Canada

The National Council on Welfare has released a new report showing that Alberta's social assistance rates are among the lowest in Canada in almost all categories.

Income assistance rates remain well below the cost of an average basket of basic goods.

The report confirms that Alberta's social assistance system is not a "hand up," but rather a hand that keeps too many individuals and families struggling below the survace.

Who Cares ... When No One is There to Help?

Families Who Care hosted a rally on the legislative grounds on October 28, 2008.

Human service agencies are deeply concerned that the Province has not resolved the staffing crisis threatening their ability to serve children, youth and families in crisis and persons with disabilities.

Agencies estimate that funds contained in this year's provincial budget will amount average funding increases of less than 5% across the sector, a rate that barely keeps pace with inflation.

Find out how you can call attention to this growing crisis and demand action from the provincial government.

FOIPP Documents Reveal Game of Hide-and-Seek: PIA calls for investigation of federal funding for childcare

Childcare advocates are still calling on the government of Alberta to account for $25.9 million it received this summer as our share of the federal transfer to create more childcare spaces.

On March 7, Public Interest Alberta released the results of its request for information about the fate of the $25.9 million. The documents show that the government designated the funds for general revenue, rather than for the intended increase in childcare spaces. Childcare in Alberta remains in crisis.
