Re: Request for Criminal Investigation of the Offices of the Premier and Minister of Health, and Alberta Health Services for Corruption and Breach of Public Trust

 

Dear Deputy Commissioner Hill,

 

I am writing to you today with grave concern and to request an expedited and formal investigation into allegations regarding the procurement of health services detailed in two recent Globe and Mail stories, which include allegations made by the former CEO of Alberta Health Services (“Alberta ousted health services CEO amid probe into medical contracts, document alleges”, Globe and Mail, February 5, 2025; “Alberta Minister stripped health agency of power to negotiate private surgical contracts, document shows”, Globe and Mail, February 11, 2015).

 

These allegations, which appear to involve corruption and breach of public trust, as well as political interference into government procurement, must be investigated independently and not at the direction of any of the offices potentially involved. Over $600M dollars in public taxpayer monies are at stake in the current allegations, and I fear there may be more.

 

The most recent allegations appear to show that the senior most elected officials in Alberta’s government were connected to contracts for health services that did not follow any standard procurement processes and appear to have involved potential kickbacks for individual elected officials.

 

Given the limited powers available to the Auditor General to audit financial statements and performance, but not potential ethical or criminal breaches in conduct, I am impelled to write to you as the Commanding Officer of the RCMP in Alberta to intervene and investigate in the public interest.

 

Given the seriousness of the allegations, the mounting concerns of every day Albertans, and the risk of potential evidence being lost, I would greatly appreciate a response from your office as soon as practicable.
