Job Description
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Officer is a full-time position responsible for managing media relations and communications.
This position is based in Edmonton, with the possibility of a hybrid remote/on-site working arrangement.
The successful candidate will have a broad range of skills and experience related to membership engagement and communications. They will also have strong interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively and professionally with a broad group of organizations and individuals, strengthening existing relationships and building new ones.

As PIA covers all of Alberta, a valid driver’s license is strongly preferred.
This is a unionized position with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 474.
Areas of Responsibility
Communications
- Develop and implement the organization's communications strategy, including internal and external communications, membership growth, media relations, and public engagement
- Provide general communications support to the executive director, including speaking notes and key messages
- Research, write, and produce multimedia and print materials for advocacy campaigns
- Design and write the organization’s quarterly newsletter (“The Advocate”) and e-newsletter
- Develop and implement a social media strategy
- Develop, write and edit website content
- Write and coordinate advertising, publications, including OpEds, articles, press releases, media statements, and written remarks.
- Develop and maintain relationships with news media and journalists
- Work with designers and suppliers to create communications and advertising products
- Promote and coordinate events and media conferences
- Work remotely when required
Membership
- Support the executive director in the development of the organization’s membership growth and engagement strategy, including monthly donors, new memberships, membership renewals, and membership relations
- Lead the planning of events, in-person and virtual, and engagement with membership
- Support the executive director in planning engagement strategy with organizational and individual membership
- Manage and update the membership relations database in coordination with the Finance and Administrative Officer
- Plan and support tours/events across Alberta to support PIA’s engagement with members across the province
- Support and implement the development of new membership benefits
Other Duties
- Represent the organization at meetings as needed
- Contribute to the organization’s strategic directions
- Regularly attend task force meetings and support their development and sustainability
- Provide support to other staff as assigned
Skills
- Membership engagement and development
- Strong written and verbal communications
- Able to use a broad range of CRMs, Canva, Google Suite, and word processing software
- Self-starter and ability to work independently when required
- General understanding of budgets and bookkeeping
- Experience with New/Mode and NationBuilder preferred but not required
Details:
As per the collective agreement, the starting salary is $56,128.80. Full health and retirement benefits are included in addition to the base salary.
